PROJECTS ~ IN FINAL DRAFT |
KARNIVAL II ~ THE BOOK OF NOLAIn contrast to the first and third novels, the scope of this story is much narrower, spanning the events that occur over the course of a matter of months. Nola and Heath have been reunited, but all is not well: Heath is tormented by the truth of his birth, by nightmares, by all that the family has endured; Nola is "freaked out" about being with her son, who harbours such resentment toward her and Chloe, and is heartbroken to have lost Ralph. Meanwhile, as the residents of Vancouver struggle through the aftermath of the earthquake, newspaper articles and personal correspondences reunite further Klieg's troupers, and recount what occurs when a mysterious teenage girl leaves a comatose man in the care of a B.C. clinic. I had SO MUCH FUN writing this one, allowing all the various voices to speak for themselves. And anyone who knows me can tell you that Nola is my absolute favourite. I so admire her strength and courage!

Praise for Karnival:
Quill & Quire - Robert Wiersema "From its evocative opening sentences to its startling yet inevitable finale, Karnival ... weaves a compelling spell. ... Mortensen has created a vividly true world, populated with misfits and cast-offs, runaways and seekers." The Globe and Mail - Jim Bartley "A precarious mix of picaresque, horror, romance and the explicitly inspirational, Karnival is a bumpy but entertaining ride ending in a heartfelt plea for human dignity. ... sheer weirdness." Showcase - A. Haq, Producer "The strongest opening chapter in contemporary Canadian literature. ... Enjoyed every page thoroughly. ... What great writing, amazing setting and super pacing." Amazon.ca - Moe Berg, Author and Musician (The Pursuit of Happiness) "Mortensen's characters are extremely resourceful and competent, like bizzaro-world versions of Ayn Rand heroes ... Mortensen's simple storytelling makes even the strangest events perfectly believable, though, and Karnival's themes are familiar ones: people should be accepted for who they are, and love comes when we accept ourselves." |

MICHAEL MORTENSEN'S WICKED PEOPLEAll these stories were conceived and written expressly for this collection. Quite frankly, as I find this form somewhat limiting, I doubt that I will ever produce another collection of short works. Cayle Chernin and Leslie Ann Coles are working with me in adapting the collection to series format. We have been discussing adapting pieces for radio and stage as well. As I quite enjoyed the collaborative process of rewriting The Circle Eternal, I'm quite looking forward to working with these two amazing women in bringing these characters to life. Stay tuned!
